Sentenced to 19 years and 7 months

I am an inmate at the Federal Prison Camp at Alderson, W.V. I have served 10 years and 3 months, having been incarcerated since 1994. I was charged with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute heroin and cocaine. I am a first time non violent offender.

In reality, I have never denied my guilt to possession with intent to distribute heroin. I was a small time drug dealer in Detroit, Michigan. I was a go between or the middle person as you call it. I picked up drugs from my connection and sold them to my two co-defendants.

One year before I was indicted, I was feeling pretty good about myself. I was a recovering addict who had just graduated with my bachelors degree in business administration. My family was proud of me.

There is nothing I want more than to go home to be with my children and grandchildren. I LOVE them all so much, the years away from them don't get easier. The truth is, as each year goes by I feel like my heart is being broken over and over again. I can see the sadness in the eyes of my children and grandchildren and feel their pain.

In the more than 10 years of my incarceration I have maintained clear conduct, and have taken classes that were available to me to improve my character I strive to be a good role model to those who come in contact with me.

Being in prison has been another learning experience for me. I see things so much more clearly now. I believe I've learned my lesson and have paid my debt to society, and that everyone deserves a second chance.

I pray every day that Congress will change the harsh drug laws.

I pray that Parole will be reinstated in the Federal Prisons, and I especially pray that President Bush will commute my sentence, and the sentences of many other offenders in my situation.

Sincerely, Joyce Ramos
